The Mellor March was founded in 1994 by Pad Whitham, Richard Jones and Tim Lowe. The first March started and finished at Mellor Church and raised just over £1000. Then they moved to the Royal Oak as a base for registration and refreshment at the end of the walk. To date, over £120,000 has been donated ‘to cancer causes in our community.'
This year’s March is on Sunday 6 May. Register at the Royal Oak from 9.30am, breakfast is available at the Hare and Hounds on route. The March is approx 10 miles but circular so people can head for base at any point.
Walkers are invited to put forward any deserving local causes; for instance, an item of equipment for a cancer ward that a resident has frequented, help with research into specific cancers afflicting people in this community or a donation to enhance the life of someone affected by cancer, as in Tom's case. Some walkers obtain sponsorship for the March and ask that their money goes to a particular cancer cause and the fund will normally match their contribution.

For a year starting on December 18th 2011, a number of friends who grew up around Mellor and Marple will join the Queen in a year of celebrations: 60 years on the throne for HRM; 60th birthday parties for the Mellor boys.
Rather than having gifts lavished upon them, those wishing to acknowledge the Mellor 60 birthdays are encouraged to support the Mellor March.
